Tuesday, January 15, 2008: Scenes from Boracay at Night |
Return to Journal TOC >> |
Boracay at night is sort of the anti-Manila; if anything, it’s aggressively wholesome. Other than a few seminude paintings at art galleries, there’s none of Malate’s suggestiveness - in fact, nowhere you wouldn’t let your seven-year-old wander around. I was afraid to bring my camera out at night (which is sensible in Manila, but made me feel silly here) as we walk to D’Mall at Station Two, which is a sort of mazelike bazaar of beach emporiums.
We soak in the sights of Filipino beach life after dark as we walk:
Three bearded men in pink sitting on stools and very intently playing James Taylor and Tracy Chapman tunes as if they were religious music.
A bar playing disco versions of John Denver.
An all-you-can-eat mongolian buffet, near a korean seafood buffet.
A stand serving lobster and other crustaceans under the name “bugs.”
An indian restaurant under a huge canopy with small tables - looking amazingly relaxing and with a very Arabian Nights feel.
A Haagen-Dasz store that also sells Cuban cigars.
The winding bazaar of touristy shops and crafters.
